Ernest started it with his wife Alyce in 1942.

Ernest Montoya sold newspapers outside the Southern Hotel and carried cement for the tile setters before he earned his contractor's license in 1942 and, with his wife Alyce, founded State Roofing and Insulation. They roofed army barracks through the war years and helped rebuild Tehachapi after the 1952 earthquake.

In 1971 the company became Bakersfield Shingles Wholesale, the BSW on the trucks ever since, at 4 P Street. Ernest's family runs it from that same corner today.
