When the tax credit ended, a wave of solar-only companies folded, and the systems they installed became orphans: nobody monitoring them, nobody honoring the workmanship warranty, nobody to call when production drops. Here is the thing the solar industry would rather skip past: a solar installation is a roofing job. Every mount is a penetration through your shingles or tile, through the underlayment doing the real waterproofing, into the structure of your house. Do that forty times with care and the roof never notices. Do it forty times carelessly and you have bought a leak with a twenty-five-year head start. Our solar crews are roofing crews first. They find rafters instead of hoping, they prepare the roof surface before anything is drilled, and they treat the underlayment like the raincoat it is. That preparation is invisible in the sales brochure and decisive on the roof.

Ask any solar bidder this before you sign: what happens to my roof warranty when you drill through it? Roofing manufacturer warranties cover a roof system installed and penetrated to spec. Mounts put in by a third party with improvised flashing can give the manufacturer grounds to deny coverage where damage traces back to those holes, and by the time anyone finds out, the solar company and the roofer are pointing at each other over your kitchen table. That cannot happen here, because there is no third party. A word on the tax credit, since everyone asks: the 30% federal residential credit has ended, and any company still selling with it is selling with yesterday's math.
For many Kern County homes, yes, because the local math never depended only on the credit: long cooling seasons, high summer usage and strong sun do most of the work. For some homes it genuinely does not pencil anymore, and the only way to know which you are is to run your actual usage against your actual rate plan.
